Lumbar Facet Irritation

Lumbar Facet Irritation - Chiropractic ConditionsSymptoms: The main symptom of lumbar facet irritation is a well-localized lower back pain—you can pinpoint the exact site of discomfort. Lumbar facet irritation is closely related to lumbar facet syndrome – those suffering from lumbar facet syndrome also feel pain in their hips, buttocks or upper leg. Lumbar facet irritation often precedes lumbar facet syndrome; therefore it’s important to visit Dr. Suzan Starler, D.C. at the first signs of the milder lumbar facet irritation so it does not evolve into lumbar facet syndrome.

Overview: Your lumbar spine is located at the center of your lower back, just above the buttocks. Lumbar facet syndrome affects the lumbar facet joints in this area and is quite painful. The joints connect the vertebrae in the spine, and protect the spine by limiting excessive motion and preventing the vertebrae from locking together.

Lumbar facet irritation usually develops after a sudden twisting motion or straightening up from a bent position. It can also be caused by repetitive twisting motions like swinging a golf club. This type of activity stretches the joint capsules and/or jams the facet joints, resulting in swelling and inflammation. Poor posture, misaligned joints and everyday wear-and-tear can also cause lumbar facet irritation.

The symptoms of lumbar facet irritation are often made worse from sleeping on your stomach, working with your arms above your head or rising from a seated position. These types of activity place abnormal stress on the joints, making them more vulnerable to injury and irritation.

Dr. Suzan can provide effective treatment for lumbar facet irritation that can relieve your pain and restore function to your misaligned or malfunctioning joints.
